The interstitial night time space always holds a vague sense of
vulgarity, menace, and virility for me.
Who can I allow myself to become with the cover of night?
This performance investigated acceptable intimacies between men which we don't typically think of as including care or connection—vignettes like barbering, personal safety equipment checks, administering medication, etc. We were interested in things outside of the typical homo-erotic lexicon and we focused on times where there’s no need to declare 'no homo' in the moment. As two gay men, we found it odd that even we struggled to express closeness or fondness in these kind of moments. I wrote this piece for Allan Conkel and I specifically, to explore that territory and consider expressions of closeness, care, and failures to connect..
Participants joined me in my "infinity headspace" and answered questions about their lives. The 7 questions were themed around Shakespeare's "Seven Ages of Man" from the play As You Like It. The box becomes a shared burden and an intimate place of give and take. The underlying complication is this: I have built this thing for them and in return I ask for their stories. They take the opportunity to be heard, but they must help me hold the weight if they are to be heard.

A grand spectacle to distract from the intimacy of the interaction and conversation.
Individual engagements with a prearranged audience. Each participant was played a personal tune and given a short text to read to the group, waiting in a separate area. Neither the artist nor the audience received the whole performance in full and each interaction was unique and tailored to the relationship of the artist and audience.
